Department of Public Works-Storm Drains & Street Lights

Storm Drains

The Department of Public Works (DPW) maintains thousands of storm drain structures and hundreds of miles of drainage pipe. This includes regularly inspecting the storm drain system and repairing grates, clearing blocked strom drain pipes, and clearing debris from storm drain structures.

The storm drains are designed to handle normal water flow, but flooding may occasionally occur during heavy rain. Also, inconsiderate people sometimes dump trash and other debris into the storm drains which causes additional flooding problems.

Our mission is to regularly maintain the storm drains so that they will function reliably.

Street Lights

The Department of Public Works is responsible for all street lights (1) that have been approved by the Planning Board and Township Administrator, and (2) are located on streets that have been dedicated to and accepted by Little Egg Harbor Township.

The approval process begins when the developer of a residential subdivision submits a site plan and subdivision application to the Planning Board. The Planning Board typically conditions approval of the application upon the submission of a street lighting plan prepared by Atlantic Power Delivery. The proposed street lighting plan is then reviewed, and approved or rejected by the Township Administrator in consultation with the Municipal Engineer.

The developer bears the up front costs related installing poles, fixtures, lamps and associated wiring and infrastructure. Thereafter, when the developer notifies the township that the street lighting has been installed and accepted for service by Atlantic Power and that certificates of occupancy have been issued for at least 50% of the dwelling units and 50% of the floor area of the non-residential uses, the municipality makes arrangements to assume the payments for providing street lighting on the dedicated public street on a continuing basis. The annual cost related to street lighting is one of the largest miscellaneous appropriation items in the municipal budget and accounts for approximately 2.5 cents of your municipal purposes tax.

Little Egg Harbor Township will consider approval of new mid-block street lights on existing public streets provided that the initial installation cost is paid for by the property owner(s) who request the new street light.

To report streetlight outage or other streetlight repair call 609-296-3600 or use the online Street Light Repair Request Form. The Department of Public Works relies heavily on the public to inform us when street lights have burned out.
