Application Instructions

What should you bring with you when applying for your marriage license?


  1. If you are divorced or have had your marriage annulled, bring the divorce decree or the civil annullment documents.
  2. Death certificate, if your former spouse is deceased.
  3. A copy of your birth certificate, drivers license, Passport, or state identification.
  4. Proof of your residency.
  5. Your social security card or social security number (N.J.S.A. 37:1-17).
  6. A witness (18 years or older) who knows both the male and female applicants.
  7. A $28.00 fee.


PLEASE DO NOT SIGN THE MARRIAGE APPLICATION PRIOR TO MEETING THE MUNICIPAL REGISTRAR OR DEPUTY MUNICIPAL REGISTRAR. YOU MUST SIGN THE APPLICATION, WHILE UNDER OATH, IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ISSUING AUTHORITY.

There is a 72 hour waiting period between the filing of the application and the issuance of the license. This 72-hour waiting period begins at the time the application is filed with the local Registrar.

More Information

  • Your social security number is not subject to disclosure under the Open Public Records Act (i.e., right to know law).
  • If any documents you are required to supply to the local Registrar are in a foreign language, they must be accompanied by an English translation.
  • If the bride is a resident of New Jersey, the marriage license must be obtained from the local Registrar in the municipality where the bride resides.
  • If the bride is not a resident of New Jersey but the groom is a resident of New Jersey, the license must be obtained from the local Registrar in the municipality where the groom resides.
  • A license issued when either the bride or groom is a resident of New Jersey may be used anywhere in New Jersey.
  • If both the bride and groom are nonresidents of New Jersey, the license must be obtained from the local Registrar of the municipality where the marriage will be performed and is only valid for use in that municipality.
